PVRWire Gets Second Life

pvrwire-tvsquad.jpg

No, this post is not about the online, virtual world of Second Life. Instead it’s about the retirement and semi-resurrection of the blog PVRWire. For industry folks and dedicated consumers, PVRWire has been a must-read for quite a while. Part of the Weblogs, Inc. network of blogs (parent to another favorite tech site Engadget), PVRWire has been regularly staffed with high-quality, if irreverent reporters/bloggers.

Then last week the blog reported its own retirement.

First, it’s a bizarre world in which reporters comment on their publication’s demise as it’s happening. Second, and luckily for us, it’s become clear rather quickly that “retirement” was perhaps an overstatement.

The PVRWire writers have now made the short leap over to another blog on the network called TV Squad, which covers a broader range of TV happenings. I guess someone figured PVRs/DVRs are old news, or at least not news in and of themselves, and I have to admit, the change makes a certain amount of sense. It’s likely that DVRs are going to get sucked up into new devices over the next couple of years. So why not acknowledge that the power of the technology is about what it does for the overall television experience, and not what’s new in software release version 2.1.6? After all, nobody writes about game consoles without also covering the games available on them. Maybe we’ve now reached the same point with DVRs.

In any case, I’m glad the PVRWire team hasn’t disappeared. After all, just this past week they covered Motorola’s new set-tops! Great reporting… :)
