There’s nothing sexier than a VoIP adapter. I tried to convince a reporter of this once, and he
just wasn’t buying it. Nonetheless, I’ll make my case again here.
Remember the bad old days of dial-up? Either you got bumped off the Internet when someone tried to call in, or you left people hanging for hours while surfing the Web. Then came broadband and the always-on connection. Then came routers with multiple connections. And finally routers with built-in voice adapers, combining VoIP with wired ports and wireless Internet access. Yup, sexy.
Alright, in all seriousness, this type of home router device is going to become the anchor of connectivity the way the plain modem once was – whether it comes from a provider like Vonage (which happened to announce its offering of the Motorola VT2542 adapter today), or a cable company or a telecom operator. Voice and data are going to become more and more inseparable… with video of course following closely on their heels. Not just a triple play, but a triple play where the lines between services grow ever more blurry.
