How Much Bandwidth for HDTV?

It’s clear that HDTV is exploding both in terms of content and consumer adoption. The latest stats I’ve heard are that Pricewaterhouse-Cooper predicts 60% HDTV penetration within five years, while Kagan is significantly more bullish in predicting 81% adoption by 2010. And check out the Multichannel News article from yesterday on how even [...]

Motorola, the Software Company

When I think of Motorola software I think of the IPTV set-top software deployed mainly outside the US, and I know I’m probably one of a very few number of Americans who make that mental connection. However, software itself shouldn’t be a stretch of the brain for most people who think about Motorola. [...]

Mark Cuban Does It Again

Remember I said just a few days ago that I couldn’t wait to see what Mark Cuban had to say at the CTAM Summit? Well, I’m not disappointed. According to Multichannel News, Cuban has proclaimed that the Internet is dead. How’s that for a little pot stirring?
In all seriousness, Cuban makes some [...]

TiVo’s Survival

Todd Spangler has a great piece up today on TiVo’s survival dilemma, which Om Malik goes on to validate over on GigaOM. Todd’s piece is a must-read.
One option TiVo may have had at one point was to shift to a software-only model. Given its die-hard fan following, it probably would have [...]

Not to Belabor the CableCARD Issue, but…

As part of a conversation today someone emphasized to me that Verizon’s CableCARD waiver from the FCC is only a one-year grace period for advanced (HD and DVR) set-tops. Seven-Oh-Seven is past. But Seven-Oh-Eight isn’t that far away.
I bring this up not to hype another deadline, but to point out that a year [...]

CTAM Summit 2007

The annual cable marketing conference, CTAM Summit, is underway in Washington DC and Multichannel News is managing the daily coverage along with CTAM publication Extra Extra. (PDF links available at the CTAM Summit page linked above) Here are a few nuggets I picked out from the write-ups:

A recent CTAM study indicates that 29% [...]

Terayon and Targeted Advertising

Dynamic ad insertion has long been the darling of industry conferences, papers and trade rags. However, we’ve seen very little of the technology actually deployed, and now the advertising world is in a tumult for other reasons. First there’s the issue of people skipping commercials with their DVRs, and second there’s the fact [...]

ITU Approves of DOCSIS 3.0

Multichannel News picked up a nice little tidbit about the progress of DOCSIS 3.0 internationally. Apparently last month the International Telecommunications Union issued approvals related to the DOCSIS 3.0 standard at a meeting in Singapore. This means the CableLabs standard is one step closer to international deployment.
In fact, Singapore is home to Starhub, [...]

OCAP No More

During a webcast earlier this week, CableLabs officially exchanged the term OCAP for OpenCable Platform. One less acronym on the books. Apparently OpenCable Platform indicates hardware and software where OCAP referred to software only.
A representative from CableLabs also mentioned that program guides are getting the most attention in these early days of OpenCable, [...]

Living Without a DVR

A large portion of the American public is still living without a DVR – that was my stunning takeaway from a recent study by The Carmel Group. While Multichannel News focuses on the fact that cable providers have taken the DVR lead away from satellite operators (it was only a matter of time), I [...]
