I was convinced in 2003 that digital video recorders had finally arrived. TiVo and ReplayTV brought them to a niche market and cable brought them to the masses.
However, were DVRs really mainstream back then, or just popular in my hyper-tech surroundings?
Whatever the answer, I think we can safely say that DVRs are officially mainstream as of 2007. In addition to the fact that my thoroughly-non-tech neighbors have heard of the concept, the actual term “DVR” has just been added to Merriam-Webster’s list of new words. Brad Linder over at PVR Wire reported the news of DVR’s coinage, along with other sample additions, including ginormous and sudoku.
