The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council Europe event officially kicks off tomorrow, and to drum up excitement, the Council has leaked early information from a report showing that there are now more than one million FTTH subscribers throughout Europe. The growth rate was 30% from 2006 to 2007.
Of course compared to growth rates in North America and parts of Asia, 30% isn’t all that high, but it is still significant, and it means there’s plenty of room for more growth. Given the advantages of fiber networks – bandwidth, reliability, arguably cheaper to maintain – increasing deployment rates in Europe seem likely in 2008.
For context on the Council’s numbers, Verizon now has one and a half million FTTH subscribers in the US. Currently the operator is deploying GPON fiber solutions including GPON technology from Motorola.
