Jeff Baumgartner has a great post up on cable commercial services today. He’s collected data on several different MSOs and combined it with operator quotes and analysis from Heavy Reading’s Alan Breznick. Interestingly, Jeff’s findings seem to confirm something I wrote back in July, namely that there’s no known sweet spot for the number of phone lines cable operators should be providing to commercial customers. Here are some updates on current MSO commercial packages:
Comcast – Introduced an eight-line service for SMBs- Time Warner Cable – Starts with a 12-line service for commercial customers
- Cablevision – Has a 12-line service and is expected to double that to 24 lines
- Cox – Offers commercial phone service, but it’s not clear how many phone lines are included
When you’re still trying to figure out a market, the best thing to do is remain flexible. Which is exactly why Motorola launched the modular eMTA earlier this year. Cable operators can start with 12 lines and easily expand up to 48 as needed. Pretty useful for a new and unknown market, especially one that promises solid margins with growth.
