All of the major TV operators in the US are competing seriously on the quantity and quality of their HD programming. However, among the smaller guys, the HD line-ups are often significantly sparser. To help change that, Comcast Media Center (CMC), Motorola, and the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) launched an update to the HITS Quick Take Plus platform today. HITS has been around for 13 years, but the upgrade announced today was designed specifically to make it easier for small operators to add more HD content.

The recent upgrades to the HITS QT+ platform include the capability to launch local HD broadcast channels along with the choice from 22 of the most-watched HD channels available via the HITS Quantum programming service, as well as digital feeds available via HITS Quantum’s SD service, which features nearly 70 widely carried basic and expanded basic channels.
More generally, the HITS platform includes hardware, programming transport, and operational support for cable operators in smaller US markets. In addition to being good for subscribers in the far-flung reaches of cable territory, HITS is a financial boon for operators. As an example, CMC quotes one analyst as stating that HD service alone can generate an average of eight dollars per household per month. That’s some useful ARPU.
