Apparently we like TV. A lot. Ongoing Nielsen studies show our viewing times continue to increase, and the latest quarterly earnings show that telecom operators are reaping some of the benefit from our love affair with TV. AT&T reported 248,000 new U-verse subscribers in Q2, and Verizon drew in 300,000 new subs for its FiOS TV service. That takes the cumulative TV subscriber numbers for the telecom providers to 2.2 million and 2.5 million respectively.
Growth for both U-verse and FiOS is astounding when you consider that both operators only hit the one-million subscriber mark last year. At the same time, US telco TV numbers are still fairly small in comparison to cable subscriber totals. In good news for consumers, this means that the telecom companies will likely continue to innovate with new services in an effort to grab market share. And we’ve already seen that cable companies are willing to respond in kind.
