Clearwire announced yesterday that it will launch ten CLEAR WiMAX markets on September 1st, including Boise Idaho, Bellingham Washington and eight metro areas throughout Texas. Like Portland, Atlanta and Las Vegas, these markets are all running exclusively on Motorola radio access network equipment – the Motorola WAP 400 and 450 access points. Which helps to explain Motorola’s recent quarterly shipment numbers. The numbers for both access points and consumer equipment more than doubled between Q1 and Q2.
Clearwire momentum is continuing too. The operator has several more big market launches planned before the end of the year: Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle. Personally, I’m looking forward to Philadelphia, and a little hands-on testing in my home market. Stay tuned.
