In a week of WiMAX, the Irish are getting their share of 4G good fortune with news from Imagine. The Irish operator has chosen Motorola infrastructure and consumer devices for a nationwide WiMAX rollout. Phase one is already underway, and Imagine aims to cover a quarter million homes in Dublin, Wexford, Sligo, Tralee, and Athlone by mid-November.
There are a couple of interesting points to note about the Imagine deployment. First, Imagine will use Motorola’s wholesale model to offer the WiMAX network to other service providers. And second, Imagine has committed to deploying WiMAX not only in high-population areas, but also “to smaller towns and rural communities.”
On the Motorola side, the equipment in the deal includes access points, like the WAP 450 (also used by Clearwire) and the WAP 800, as well as CPE, like the USBw 100, the CPEi 775, and the CPEo 450. It’s a big customer win, and should go far to push Motorola’s CPE numbers past the recent one-million-shipments milestone. See pics below from today’s launch event.
