Luck o’ the Irish: WiMAX from Motorola and Imagine

Imagine WiMAX demo vehicle Motorola Ireland

In a week of WiMAX, the Irish are getting their share of 4G good fortune with news from Imagine. The Irish operator has chosen Motorola infrastructure and consumer devices for a nationwide WiMAX rollout. Phase one is already underway, and Imagine aims to cover a quarter million homes in Dublin, Wexford, Sligo, Tralee, and Athlone by mid-November.

There are a couple of interesting points to note about the Imagine deployment. First, Imagine will use Motorola’s wholesale model to offer the WiMAX network to other service providers. And second, Imagine has committed to deploying WiMAX not only in high-population areas, but also “to smaller towns and rural communities.”

On the Motorola side, the equipment in the deal includes access points, like the WAP 450 (also used by Clearwire) and the WAP 800, as well as CPE, like the USBw 100, the CPEi 775, and the CPEo 450. It’s a big customer win, and should go far to push Motorola’s CPE numbers past the recent one-million-shipments milestone. See pics below from today’s launch event.

  1. Thats really cool. However Clear Wimax (they are really good) for some reason has not tried to fo a big blitz in the heart of philly in center city, I am always impressed at companies that show off their technologies at public events. But Clear seems to only make blitz’s in other citites, they claim a big philly thing is being planned, but when?
    Thanks for the great story!

  2. Benny- thanks. A Philly event is almost definitely in the works. We’re still in soft launch, and the Clearwire folks want to make sure any kinks are worked out before the service is announced. Note that the Imagine launch event is happening after the network has already been in operation for a while. Philly will get its day. :)

  3. It’s official. Philly Clear launch event will take place on November 5th in Love Park, 11-3.

  4. I have used wimax now and so far to date no problems –
speeds are fine for online gaming and chat etc … no congestion either at peak times … so far so good … :)
