Om Malik published a post today on the state of global WiMAX based on a new WiMAX Forum report. It includes the handy map from the WiMAX Forum you see above, along with some key bullet points on WiMAX deployments to date. Om emphasizes the global nature of the WiMAX market (something Motorola has tried to reinforce for years), but oddly leaves Motorola out in a list of noteworthy WiMAX equipment providers. As the WiMAX Forum report itself points out, Motorola shipped its one millionth WiMAX CPE device back in September. Not only that, but Motorola’s WiMAX network deployments run far and wide across the globe. The list of countries where Motorola has network deployments includes but is not limited to: the US, Chile, Bangladesh, Germany, Uganda, Bahrain, Taiwan, France, Malaysia, Jordan, Mexico, Greece, Fiji, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Pakistan, and the UAE. Only today, Motorola announced that Wateen Telecom in Pakistan is accelerating its rollout of WiMAX services, and is on track to double CPE volume from 100k to 200k by year’s end. Motorola is Wateen’s exclusive WiMAX CPE and infrastructure supplier.
Om is right that much of the future of WiMAX lies outside the US (though I am personally enjoying Clear service in Philly). Motorola is a big part of that future.
