Verizon: New Hardware, Software, and Subscribers

A few Verizon news items have caught my eye recently, and I thought I’d bundle them up in one post. First of all, FiOS growth continues, with 185k new Internet customers and 168K new FiOS TV customers added in the last quarter. That brings FiOS subscriber totals to 3.6  million and three million respectively. The market has focused on the fact that FiOS growth is slowing, but three million is still an impressive milestone. Especially when you consider that Verizon has tripled TV subscribers in just over two years.

Verizon also continues to add features to the FiOS TV service with regular widget updates. The newest widgets, just announced this week, bring YouTube and Internet radio to the TV. All widgets are accessible through Verizon’s Media Manager software, which, until recently, was only available to DVR users. However, Verizon has also now provided an update to make Media Manager accessible to all FiOS TV subscribers. Widgets for everyone.

Finally, as I mentioned earlier in the month, Verizon is getting ready to start deploying new Motorola DVRs with 320GB hard drives. I’m expecting further word on those set-tops soon. Stay tuned.
