You know that nice free-Wi-Fi perk a few cable operators have been handing out to subscribers? Well get ready for more free Wi-Fi access. Motorola is showing a cable Wi-Fi solution at The Cable Show and notes that a lab trial is already underway with one major MSO. I got the scoop from Motorola’s Brent Patterson who showed me Motorola’s optical node housing with embedded 802.11n/g/b/a access point. It’s dual-radio, 2×2 MIMO, and can operate at 2.4GHx or 5.xGHz. Patterson noted that cable operators have an advantage in this space because of existing power sources from coax, backhaul capacity, and even mounting assets all over the country.
Added benefit for me: I get access to the Motorola Wi-Fi connection in the booth. Good for blogging.
