No World Cup 3D Viewing Parties?

Just one day before the start of the World Cup, and the launch of ESPN’s 3D television channel, I finally got around to looking for locations where I might get in on some of the 3D sports action. Although an early adopter, I’m not so cutting edge that I’ve gone out and bought my own 3D TV set yet. Like many other individuals, I’m waiting for the prices to go down. Still, I figured plenty of broadcasting and retail partners would be hosting events with batches of 3D glasses to go around. Not so. Kent Gibbons and Todd Spangler at Multichannel News did some research and found that none of the big names have events planned. Not ESPN, or Comcast, or DirecTV.

Guess I’ll be looking for coverage of the 3D launch after the fact. Hey, Comcast Voices blog, I’m looking at you. How will 3D soccer coverage differ from the Masters Tournament? Will there be a goalie cam?

  1. Pity you don’t live in Australia ..

Our Licencing authority here has allocated spectrum for temporary Free to Air 3D test transmissions.

SBS is broadcasting all available world cup games in 3D free to air, direct to home.
Resolution is a bit disappointing but the 3D looks great.

Our Channel 9 Network has also used the test facility to transmit live coverage of the Australian NRL “State Of Origin” series with full HD 3D MPEG4 pictures which looked spectacular.

FoxSports Australia also did a Test Transmission on their subscription service last month of a preliminary world cup game of the Socceroos in Melbourne.

Several other Sporting events are planned in the coming months.

Lots happening in 3D in Australia.

  2. […] Providence Rhode Island. Comcast hosted public screenings of the 3D Masters event, but there were no public 3D screenings of the World Cup. Given the event-based nature of 3D at this point, the tie-in with local sports bars is highly […]
