New Motorola Gateway at Best Buy

The Motorola SBG6580 snagged DOCSIS 3.0 certification last December, and a Mark of Excellence award in March. It’s also been a topic on user forums since January of this year. Now the cable modem gateway is available in retail, exclusively from Best Buy.

If you have cable Internet service, you have a choice of either leasing a modem from your cable company, or buying one outright from the store. The SBG6580 comes with several premium features including DOCSIS 3.0 compatibility (works with higher-speed D3 services), an 802.11N wireless access point, and a Gigabit Ethernet 4-port switch with an advanced firewall. The gateway, also known as the SURFboard eXtreme Wireless Cable Modem, also offers plug-and-play installation with Wi-Fi Pairing button for easy set-up. MSRP is $149.99.

  1. Is the bootfile available yet for this model? Comcast, Cox and a few other systems are not able to activate this modem because they do not have configuration files built for it. It’s spotty though because in some area’s it works, while others it’s not.

  2. Cypherstream- I’m trying to find out. Will pass on an update as soon as I have one.

  3. Thanks Mari,

I see another report in a different thread that a customer on TWC could not get the 6580 to take. What they ended up doing is TWC put the modem in as a 5120 (docsis 2) so then it fired right up.

It must be that spanking new. People don’t think to check exact model number compatibility at purchase. They only look for the “Docsis 3.0 cablemodem” which is a standard.

  4. Looks like it is now on Comcast’s approved devices list!

Just took a little bit to get certified for their systems.

  5. It does seem to be rolling out to the customer support level now. Guess they weren’t expecting an immediate rush. :)

  6. I currently have Comcast for cable, internet and phone. So I have a combination VOIP cable modem.

Is there a version that handles VOIP as well?

Also, it is hard to tell from the specs, but does the WIFI portion do both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz or just 1 or the other? Can legacy 802.11G devices use 2.4GHz while newer 802.11N items cruise in the uncluttered 5 GHz spectrum?

    • As far as I can tell, it does not support Voice lines. It can do either 2.4 or 5GHz WiFi, which is fine for most applications.

  7. I’m not very good with networks, so this is probably a dumb question. My home network consists of a htpc and a server connected to my router via ethernet cable, a desktop connected via MoCCA and another HTPC, an xbox 360 and Panny Plasma via another MoCCa. If I get this modem, can I ditch my router, hook the HTPC and server up directly to the ports in this modem and still use the MoCCA properly? Thanks.

  8. […] I hear that Motorola’s new retail gateways are selling well, even after such a short time on the market.  And while some people believe that […]

  9. Robert- No, currently there is not a version that handles VoIP. But yes, the gateway does operate in both the 2.4 and 5.0 frequencies.

Hogues- If you’re using a North American cable operator, then yes, that will work. It won’t work with FiOS or a DSL service.

  10. Thanks!

  11. i am trying to have two xbox 360 runing live but they r not working like they should one will say rise and the other one will be fine. i am trying to find out how to get the gateway to work.

  12. If Cable Gateway(Cable Modem with Wireless Function) can sell into retail, what about the model that combined VOIP. (I see some models that 2 telephone port), will it the right product for retail?
