Golf, basketball, and soccer have had their 3D debuts. Now Verizon has announced it’s bringing football into the action with a 3D broadcast of the pre-season NFL game between the Giants and the Patriots on September 2nd. Verizon will use FiOS1 to do the event production, and will deliver the game to FiOS TV subscribers with 3D sets and Motorola set-tops. There’s no word yet on 3D VOD assets from the match-up, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them added in. Also of interest, Verizon is hosting two 3D screenings of the game at bars in Manhattan and Providence Rhode Island. Comcast hosted public screenings of the 3D Masters event, but there were no public 3D screenings of the World Cup. Given the event-based nature of 3D at this point, the tie-in with local sports bars is highly logical.
