Whether you believe Verizon needs more HDTV or doesn’t need it, the operator announced today that it will have more than 150 HD channels by the end of 2008, introduced on a market-by-market basis. Also in the press release, Verizon will offer a “limited number” of on-demand HD flicks before the end of this year, and will increase to 1,000 HD VOD titles in 2008.
One note at the bottom of the press release makes mention of the fact that Verizon will also expand the Home Media DVR service next year to allow streaming of HD content in the home. In terms of hardware, this shouldn’t be difficult at all. Verizon currently uses the Motorola QIP6416 as a hub set-top for the Home Media DVR service and the Motorola QIP2500 for client set-tops in networked rooms. Swap out the QIP2500 with the QIP6200 (also in use by Verizon), and you’re set.
