LTE Products for 700MHz and 2.6GHz Spectrum

The 4G wireless standards work off multiple frequency bands, two of which have been in the news quite a bit lately. The 700MHz auction in the US finished up a few short months ago, and the UK has a 2.6GHz auction coming that was delayed just today amidst calls from wireless companies to determine first how much 2G spectrum they’ll be allowed to re-use for 3G services. The point in all this is that 4G products can be designed for different frequency bands. Not all operators will use the same spectrum when they roll out 4G services.

Motorola announced today that its first LTE products next year will include devices network infrastructure for both the 700MHz and 2.6GHz bands in order to “help operators increase coverage and capacity of their networks.” No doubt In the future there will be some multi-band devices in the mix, allowing consumers to move from one spectrum band to another. And, quite likely there will even be devices that support LTE and WiMAX both. Even when operators have to choose a single standard, consumers are likely have options.
